Jeremiah 35:6-8 But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers. Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us

Sometimes we are guilty of giving more credence to the words of men than we do the word of the Lord. One way in which this manifests itself is doing whatever it takes to carry out the last wishes of someone we treasure but not taking the same approach to the word of God. The Rechabites, who were the descendants of Rechab, a man from Judah, were totally committed to carry out the words of their father Jonadab. Before his death he commanded his sons that they and all future generations should not drink wine, nor build houses, nor sow seeds, nor plant or own any vineyards. He was asking them to give up a lot. What was the purpose of the request? To push his descendants to deny themselves of worldly pleasures so that they could give greater focus to the things of God. Despite all that they had to give up, they carried out the words of their father. How far would you go to adhere to the word of God?

Go to whatever extent necessary to obey the word of God. To show Jeremiah the resolve of the Rechabites to keep the words of their father, God instructed Jeremiah to bring them to the house of the Lord in one of the chambers and offer them wine to drink.  They were firm in their position that they would not act contrary to the word of their father; not even the influence of the great prophet Jeremiah could cause them to do differently. The lesson God was trying to teach the people of Judah, why he sent Jeremiah to the Rechabites was so that they would learn to do whatever it takes to honor the words of their Heavenly Father. The extent to which we are willing to go to honor the words of our earthly father or other men, should be even greater when it comes to the word of God. If that is not your attitude to the word of God, now is a good time to develop that discipline.

Life Application: Go to whatever extent necessary to fulfill the words of the Lord by falling deeply in love with God. What you love is what will become your priority and your priority is what you will do.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be fervent in carrying out your will. I seek to please you in all that I do and say. Help me to do so daily. In Jesus’ name, amen.
