Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
It is not everything that you should allow yourself to hear. Why? Because what you hear repeatedly is what you will believe, and what you believe is what you will do. Consider the implication of repeatedly hearing something that is not true. Ultimately you will believe a lie and act accordingly; the result is likely to be wrong decisions that harm relationships and erode your finances. Anytime we base our decisions on the teachings and ideas of men that is the result. Look at what happened to the Children of Israel when they were sold the idea that they were like grasshoppers to the people of the land of Canaan by the ten (10) spies who brought the evil report. They believed the lie and acted contrary to the word of God and as a consequence spent an additional 38 years in the wilderness. Believing a lie caused a chain reaction that caused an entire generation to miss out on their Promised Land.
Even though you may consider yourself strong in the faith, you can be drawn away by enticing words of men. Guard against that by closing your ears to the philosophies and ideology of men. In Colossians 2, Paul was satisfied with the steadfastness of the faith of the church at Colosse, but thought it important to warn them against the teachings and ideas of men. He said “beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit’. The danger of the teachings and ideas of men is that they could “spoil” us or result in failure. Proverbs 14:12 tells us that “there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”. The result of the philosophies and ideology of men are failure and destruction. The reason we should close our ears to the teachings and ideas of men is that they are flawed as they are not based on the word of God. Instead they are underpinned by man’s opinion, Man’s teachings are based on their opinions, “traditions of men” and the “rudiments of this world” or cultural norms. Rather than expose yourself to these teachings, spend more time hearing the word of God and you will grow in faith and wisdom, which are necessary ingredients for you to have the victory.
Life Application: As opposed to hearing men’s teachings, Choose to continually hear the word of God by increasing the time spent reading or listening to the word of God.
Prayer: Lord, help me to focus solely on your word and what you are saying and not be enticed by beliefs and utterances that are contrary to your word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
