James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
How often have you heard people say that they do not like religion? They react negatively to it because how they see religion being practiced is not how God intended it to be. In a lot of cases today religion is based on people trying to execute their selfish agenda with not enough thought given to meeting the needs of the very people that the religion was supposed to serve. Compare that reality with the way that Jesus practiced religion. Evident from his approach was a genuine love for people and Him sacrificing himself so that the world could have life. When religion is practiced the right way people are made better off not worse.
Two (2) components of the religion that are “undefiled” or acceptable to God were mentioned in James 1:27. The first is to reach people at the point of their need. In highlighting this component, the scripture said, “visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction”. The use of the word “visit” suggests that we will have to go where people are in an effort to help meet their needs.
The second component of the religion that is acceptable to God is living a life of holiness. One of the issues that people have with religion is that our portrayal of Christ may not be consistent with the Jesus of the Bible. The scripture says that pure religion is practiced when we keep ourselves unspotted from the world: What that means is that one characteristic of the religion that God intended is walking in righteousness. If you have not been practicing true religion it is not too late to start, the Bible shows us how.
Life Application: Practice religion the way God intended by conforming your actions to the word of God; and reach the people who He called you to serve at the point of their need.
Prayer: Lord, help me to practice pure religion the way you intended it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
