Do You Have The Right Concept of God?

Daily Devotional

Mathew 16:13-16 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God

It is possible to be a Christian for years but still have the wrong concept of God. The Pharisees and Scribes were the religious leaders during the time of Jesus, but they could not see Jesus for who He really was. We know that based on what they said about him. In Luke 7:3, they referred to Jesus as a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. It is important that we have the right concept of God; because they had the wrong concept of God they could not receive Him as the Messiah. The wrong concept of God will impair our ability to accept His laws and principles and hinder us from receiving his blessings.

Jesus wanted to make sure that His disciples had the right concept of who He was. So He asked them the question: “who do men say that I am?”  in Matthew 16:13. They answered by saying that some say that thou art John the Baptist and others Elias, then Jesus asked them “who do you say that I am?” The principle Jesus was teaching was that our concept of God cannot be based on what men say, we must know God for ourselves. Peter knew God for himself hence he said thou art the Christ the son of the living God. Two factors would have aided Peter to have the right concept of Jesus. Firstly, he had an intimate relationship with Him as he, James and John made up Jesus’s inner circle.

Secondly, he got a revelation of who Jesus was. Jesus said “flesh and blood hath not revealed this to you”. The revelation Peter had came from the Holy Spirit. It is important to read the scriptures, but while you do that ask the Holy Spirit to reveal who Jesus is to you through the scriptures, so that you can have the right concept of Him.

Life Application: Carry the right concept of Jesus by harnessing an intimate relationship with Him through prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the scriptures to you.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the revelatory knowledge of who you are. You are the most high God and the one who created all things. You are the alpha and omega. Thank you for being the God of more than enough. In Jesus’ name, amen.
