7 Prayer Principles to Receive What You Ask for in Prayer

Daily Devotional

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

All of us want to receive what we ask for in prayer, but are we employing all seven (7) of the prayer principles outlined in the Bible? The first is to pray according to God’s will. 1 John 5:14 tells us that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Another principle is to ask God by faith. Mark 11:24 says that what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Pray believing that you already have what you are praying for.

A third prayer principle is to pray in the name of Jesus. Jesus said in John 14:13 that whatsoever we shall ask in his name, that will he do.

A fourth principle is to pray in the Spirit. Ephesians 6:18 instructs us to pray in the Spirit at all times.

The fifth prayer principle is to agree in prayer with someone else. Matthew 18:19 says that if two of you shall agree on the earth  touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them. Get someone to agree with you in prayer for what you are believing.

The sixth prayer principle is to persist in prayer. Jesus taught this principle in Luke 18 in the parable of the widow and the unjust judge.

The seventh principle of prayer is one that is rarely mentioned, but is extremely important to getting answers to our prayers. John mentioned it 1 John 3:22 where it said, “whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments”. The prayer principle being taught was a lifestyle of obedience. When employed John says we receive whatever we ask of God. Why is this prayer principle important? Because to consistently get answers to our prayers we need the favor of God and for that to happen we need to live a lifestyle that is pleasing to God. Psalms 34:15 confirms that this is true. It says “the eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil”. Do not live any way you feel like and then expect God to answer your prayer, but instead for better results practice the 7 principles of prayer.

Life Application: For better results in prayer practice the 7 principles of prayer by living a lifestyle that pleases God, pray God’s will by faith believing while having someone else agreeing with you in prayer. In addition, be persistent while praying always in the spirit and in the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, help me to employ all the principles that you have laid out as it relates to prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
