Desist From Doing Things the Same Way

Daily Devotional

Jeremiah 7:3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

We cannot keep doing things the same way and expect them to change. Doing it the same way will only create the same result.  The people of Judah were on a path to be removed from their land and taken into captivity by the Babylonians. They had two options before them, they could either keep doing things the same way, or they could follow God’s prescription in Jeremiah 7:3 which was to “amend their ways and doings”. The “ways” refer to bad habits that they had and subconsciously did without thinking about it.  Their doings or practices were things that they consciously did that broke the laws of God.  To create change they needed to alter their habits and practices. Given how deep rooted the problem was, the only real solution was to reprogram their mind with the word of God. However, they chose to do otherwise, and nothing changed.

Believing a lie is the number one reason we keep doing things the wrong way. The people of Judah were guilty of that. God told them In Jeremiah 7:8 “behold ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit”.  What God was doing was bringing to their attention that the major factor that was holding them back from changing was them believing lying words. To fix the problem the people of Judah needed to discontinue their false beliefs by choosing instead to believe the truth, which is the word of God. How we operate is primarily based on our beliefs, so unless we change our beliefs, we cannot see any lasting change. Because they failed to change their beliefs, they missed out on the blessing that would have come with that change and that was that God would have allowed them to stay in the land. Whatever area you need to create change, start by changing your beliefs by using the word of God.

Life Application: Change your habits and practices by altering your beliefs by memorizing, mediating upon, and practicing the word of God for a protracted period.

Prayer: Lord, erase every negative thought I have that is not in alignment with your word. May my beliefs reflect yours at all times. In Jesus’ name, amen.
