Receive Beauty for Ashes

Daily Devotional

Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

God will give you beauty for ashes, only trust him.  Among the things that Jesus was anointed to do in Isaiah 61 was to attend unto those who are sorrowful and turn their situations by giving them beauty for their ashes. What that means is that God will turn your messy situation into something beautiful. Did he not do it for Naomi? Her situation was bad. While she was living in the land of Moab, she not only lost her husband, her two sons also died. All her dreams dashed, there was only hopelessness and despair. But God turned it around for her. Her beauty for ashes came when Ruth, her daughter-in-law, married Boaz who was one of the wealthy men in Bethlehem.  As a result, she had access to wealth that she never had before. Although your situation may look messy, expect God to make it into something beautiful.

Not only did God give Naomi beauty for ashes, two other things happened. The first is that she received the oil of joy for her mourning. The name Naomi means beautiful. However, when she returned to Bethlehem she refused to be called by that name, she told them to call her “Mara”, which means bitterness. The sadness that she had about her situation caused her to refuse the name Naomi, because there was nothing beautiful about her situation. But when God turned it around, she got her joy back. Her mourning was replaced with joy. In addition, she got the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Rather than talk about her sorrowful situation, she could talk about God’s goodness in turning her situation around. Trust God to give you beauty for ashes, but when he gets through with you, He would have accomplished much more.

Life Application: Receive beauty for ashes by trusting God with all your heart to do what He said He will do.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for making preparations to improve my unfavorable circumstances. Thank you for turning my mourning into joy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
