Become More Disciplined
Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
One reason you may have not gotten the results that you desired in 2022 could be because you did not have the discipline to do what should have been done. Better results will come in 2023 if you choose to become more disciplined in practicing habits that have proven to work.
Proverbs 25:28 figuratively highlights two characteristics of the person who lacks discipline; or have “no rule over his own spirit”. The first characteristic is that they are like a city that is broken down; this symbolizes failure. Lack of discipline will always result in failure. After starting out doing all that God had instructed him to do, Jehu failed as King because thereafter he did not have the discipline to practice godly habits (2 Kings 10:26).
The person without discipline was also characterized to be like a city without walls. It is synonymous with a person with whom anything goes in that there are no set principles and habits that they practice in the pursuit of their dream or promise. However, to get the result we want to see there will have to be specific habits that we practice daily, weekly or monthly. Look at David as an example, his greatness as a psalmist could be attributed to his discipline of praising God seven (7) times per day. The great prophet Daniel prayed three (3) times per day. It should also be noted that Larry Bird, the great basketball player, had the highest free throw percentage in the NBA four times in his career, a major contributor to that was his daily habit of attempting to hit 99 free throws in a row; if he failed, he would start over.
The greats became great by acquiring the discipline to practice great habits; to follow in their footsteps you will need to do likewise. In addition to your spiritual habits, take time to identify the habits that are practiced by the best in your field with a view to make them your own and do them with consistency. If you are in business or ministry, your core habits should center around marketing, service excellence and doing more than is expected. As an employee, give attention to habits that result in personal development and growing your wisdom. In the words of the late Jim Rohn, discipline is the bridge that takes us from goals to achievements. Choose to become more disciplined.
Life Application: Become more disciplined by identifying and listing proven habits that you will practice to get the result you want and share it with a friend to help keep you accountable.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be disciplined in all that I do. Help me to remain committed even when it gets hard. In Jesus’ name, amen.
