Proverbs 27:23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks and look well to thy herds.
Knowing the state of your flocks has two elements that are critical to creating uncommon success. Its importance was highlighted by Solomon in Proverbs 27:23 when he used the phrase “be thou diligent” to know the state of your flocks. Only important matters require diligence.
The first element of “knowing the state of your flock” is being conscious of the resources, relationships and skills that you have at your disposal at any point in time. It is important that you do because God will always use something that you have in your hand now to take you to where He wants you to go. David was a skilled fighter; God used this skill to cause him to triumph over Goliath and position him as the next King in the eyes of the people. Note also that the first question that Elisha asked the widow of 2 Kings 4, who was in financial trouble, was what was in her house. The real question that she was being asked was what is it that you have now? Without that knowledge she would not have been able to give the man of God anything to work with. She told him that she had a little oil and after following his instruction, the little oil became so much that she was able to clear all her debts. Knowing what you have now is an important starting point to create uncommon success.
The second element of “knowing the state of your flock” is to continuously track your progress; this too is very important. The reason it is so critical is because it allows us to be able to identify what action steps are working and those that are not. With that knowledge we can accelerate our progress by doing more of what works and less of what doesn’t. It was because the people of Judah were not tracking their progress that they would have falsely concluded that it was the “queen of heaven” that had caused them to prosper. In Jeremiah 44:17 they said that during the time that their kings and fathers burnt incense to the queen of heaven was when they had plenty of food and saw no evil. The people of Judah made the decision to keep doing the wrong thing because they did not carefully track their progress since the time they came out of Egypt.
