Jeremiah 29:13-14 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14 And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity…
Victory will come when we seek God with all our heart. Recently the Lord showed me Jeremiah 29:13 and he highlighted that the scripture said that it is when we seek Him with all our heart that we will find Him. He emphasized the word “when”, that is the key word in the scripture. We all want to find God and see Him work in our lives without recognizing that it is tied to the “when”: the point when we make the decision to seek God wholeheartedly. In Jeremiah 29:14 God told the Israelites that they will find Him, and He would turn their captivity, but prior to saying that He established the basis on which this would happen- when they sought Him with all their heart. Decide to seek God with all your heart.
What does it mean to seek God with all your heart? Seeking God with all our heart involves both seeking His face or His presence and going hard after His laws and principles. Within that context, it is important to understand that seeking God is more than prayer and worship. If that is all that we are doing and not giving careful attention to His laws, principles and instructions, we would have missed an essential component of seeking God. Note that when Manasseh’s situation changed in 2 Chronicles 33:12-13, he did not only seek God in prayer, a key component of what he did was to turn to doing God’s laws and principles. When he did that God broke his Babylonian captivity and restored him to His throne.
There are two ingredients to seeking God with all our heart: a passion for God; and, knowledge of His laws and principles. Without one or both we will not be able to seek God with all our heart. King Josiah had a real passion for God and that propelled him to do what was right in the sight of God from the time that he became king at the age of eight (8). However, when they found the Book of the Law in the temple and read it to him, his entire approach changed. Then was when he really sought God with all His heart. Immediately after he gathered the elders of Judah and the people together and taught them the word of God and he and the people made a covenant to keep the words of God. In addition, he tore down the high places and killed the prophets of Baal. Seek God more by rekindling your passion and pursuing greater knowledge of the word of God.
Life Application: Decide to seek God with all your heart by pursuing both His presence and principles with all that you have got. Support this effort by asking God to give to you a greater passion for Him and plan to spend more time studying and doing His words.
Prayer: Lord, I will seek you with all my heart. I know that I can do absolutely nothing without you and it’s when I seek you that I will find you. Reveal who you are to me on a daily basis. In Jesus’ name, amen.
