Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Our primary responsibility as the light of the world is to dispel darkness by letting our light shine. The purpose for doing this is not to bring ourselves glory, but so that men would glorify the Father. It is with this in mind that the scripture says that they may see our good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
To what extent are you letting your light shine? And what are some practical ways in which this can be done? Based on the example set by the apostles and the early church, there are three (3) practical ways that we can let our light shine. The first way is to live in the light. The starting point to letting our light shine is to live in a way that represents Jesus. This requires us to live by the word of God and doing anything less will minimize the extent to which we let our light shine.
The second way to let our light shine is to share Jesus, who is the light, with others. Peter did this on the day of Pentecost and over 3,000 souls were saved. Even if it is only one person who is in the audience that you are sharing Jesus with, you are still letting your light shine. The Ethiopian Eunuch was the only person in Phillips’ audience in Acts 8:26-40, but he still shared Jesus and brought glory to God.
Another way in which we can let our light shine is to use the resources, talents and spiritual gifts that God has given us to touch the lives of people around us. Peter did this in Acts 3 when he healed the lame man at the gate Beautiful. Also, in Acts 9:39 Dorcas touched lives by making coats and garments and giving them to the poor and needy. It is important to note that Dorcas did not try to let her light shine the way that Peter did, because that was not her gift, but she was still effective. The principle is to use the gift that God has given you to let your light shine.
Life Application: Let your light shine by living the word of God, sharing Jesus and using whatever resources and talents that God has given you to help transform lives around you.
Prayer: Lord, May my light shine before men so that they may see my good works glorify my father in heaven. Shine your light perpetually on me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
