Deuteronomy 6:6-9 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Since inconsistency is one of the issues that we grapple with as believers, it is important that we become clear as to what we can do to become more consistent in our walk with God. In Deuteronomy 6:6-9 Moses pointed the Israelites to three (3) things that they could do to increase the level of their consistency in practicing God’s words. The first is that they should hide the word of God in their heart. In alluding to that the scripture said that “these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart”. Two ways in which we hide the word of God in our heart is to memorize and meditate upon the word of God. By doing so, the word of God will define what we believe and what we believe is what we will do more consistently.
Another thing that we can do to be more consistent is to teach the word of God every opportunity that we get. The scripture encourages us to teach them (the word of God) diligently unto our children, and we should also talk about it when we sit in our houses and while we walk on the street. Teaching the word of God not only helps others to increase their knowledge of God’s word, it also deepens our understanding of the word of God. As a result, we are able to identify ways how we can practically and more consistently apply it to our lives.
The next thing that we can do to be more consistent is to make the word of God visible all around us. To that end, Moses instructed the Israelites to write the word of God for a sign upon their hands and upon their doorposts and gates. The purpose of all of that was to constantly remind themselves of God’s word. A common reason we do not do what the word of God says is because we simply forget. However,we can minimize the possibility of that happening by making visible in our environment the important laws and principles of God that we tend to forget.
Begin a journey today to be more consistent by making a commitment to do what God requires and then follow through by adding the three (3) ways identified above to your lifestyle.
Life Application: Become more consistent by memorizing and meditating upon the God’s word and teach it every opportunity that you get. In addition, make God’s word visible in your environment so that you are constantly reminded of it.
Prayer: Lord, I am making a commitment to being more consistent in my walk with you. Help me to stay on this path. In Jesus’ name, amen.
