Zechariah 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
I was reminded recently by the Holy Spirit that the purpose of total surrender is not to make Him feel better about himself, but rather to create material changes in our lives. The point He was making was that total surrender is for our benefit, not His. It behooves us therefore to practice total surrender so that we can see the change in our lives that we want to see.
Every time that total surrender is practiced in the Bible it resulted in the people of God getting the victory. David is one example; by enquiring of God prior to every battle what David was doing was to position himself to surrender to God’s will. Total surrender is doing the will of the Father; but before David could do that, he had to first learn God’s will concerning his situation and then align himself accordingly. If we take a similar approach, we will have the victory.
It was total surrender that enabled the reconstruction of the tabernacle, after the Israelites came back from captivity. Zerubbabel led the reconstruction work and faced significant opposition in doing so. Evidently, he did all that he could to move the project ahead without much success and so God reminded him in Zechariah 4:6 how the victory would be won – by His Spirit”. One implication of what God was telling him was that to get the victory he had to do what the Spirit of God was saying. Ezra chapters 5 and 6 revealed how the tabernacle got done: Zerubbabel did what the Spirit of God spoke through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah. He got the job done by practicing total surrender. What is it that you want to get done? Do it by practicing total surrender.
Life Application: Get the job done with total surrender by discerning God’s will and doing what He says to get the victory that you want to see.
Prayer: Lord, I bow before you in complete surrender. I know that you know all things and what I need accomplished will not be done through might, nor power but by your Spirit. Help me in my quest to be totally surrendered to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
