Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
It is interesting that the first characteristic of the wise that was mentioned in the book of Proverbs is that they choose to hear. Hearing is a choice. Proverbs 1:5 says the wise will hear. Therefore, what the scripture is emphasizing is that a wise person will choose to hear. It is possible that we can be in an environment where something that we need to hear is being read or spoken and we miss it either because we were not listening or thinking that it does not apply to us. In either of those cases, we would have missed what we needed to hear in that moment simply because we chose not to hear. It is now time to emulate the wise by paying close attention to everything that is being communicated.
One reason it is important to pay attention to what is being said is to ensure our safety and protection. King Amaziah refused to listen to the rebuke of the prophet in 2 Chronicles 25:16 because he was not a part of his select group of counselors. As a result, God caused him and the people of Judah to go to war against the King of Israel and many lives were lost. Paying attention is for our good.
There are two other benefits that the scripture associates with being a keen listener. The first is an expansion of knowledge; evidenced by the scripture saying that “the wise will hear and increase learning”. The more that we pay attention to what is being communicated, the faster our knowledge will grow.
The second benefit of being a keen listener is that we will acquire more wisdom. In highlighting that the scripture says, “a man of understanding will attain unto wise counsel”. A wise person chooses to be a keen listener so that they can grow even wiser. We should adopt a similar approach.
Life Application: Expand your knowledge and grow your wisdom by being a keen listener who is totally present in every conversation and situation.
Prayer: Father, help me to be a keen listener who gleans wisdom from the words being spoken to and around me. Help me to be intentional in my listening and make the necessary adjustments after heeding wise counsel. In Jesus’ name, amen.
