Get Your Motives Right

Daily Devotional

John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

As humans we have a natural tendency to do what we want, as opposed to doing the Father’s will. Yes, it is true that it takes great discipline to do the will of the Father, but while Jesus was here on earth He mastered that discipline, which shows that it is not beyond us to do likewise. To give evidence of the level of discipline with which He executed the will of the Father, He said in John 5:30 “I can of mine own self do nothing”. The point that Jesus was making was that he refused to do anything except it was the will of the Father.

Now that we know that everything that Jesus did was aligned to the will of the Father, can the same be said about us? If the answer to that question is no, how can we develop the same discipline that Jesus had? The secret to Jesus consistently doing his Father’s will was that he had the right motive. In alluding to that He said “as I hear”; that means that whatever He heard from the Father He decided to do. The reason  He could consistently do that was because His “judgement is just”; to imply that His motive was right. His motive was to please the Father and so He said “I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me”.

It is easy to choose to do what we want when our motive is wrong. If our motive is to please ourselves then the decisions we take will be so aligned. But if our motive is to please God then it is natural that our choices will be to that end. Jesus’ motive is to always please the Father and because that is what drives Him, He made seeking the will of the Father His priority. The same is required of us.

Life Application: Become more disciplined in doing the will of the Father by getting your motives right.

Prayer: Lord, my aim is to please you in all I do and say. Speak to me and show me your will that I may fulfill your will and purpose on this earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
