Psalms 126:3-6 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad. Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
In Psalms 126 Israel found themselves in a predicament: years after they returned from Babylonian captivity, they were once again captives, likely during the time when they were under Roman rule in their own land. Given the context of their situation they needed God to deliver them again. It was with this in mind why the Psalmist said in verse 4: “turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south”. The essence of his prayer was for God to deliver them again.
In asking God to do it again, the Psalmist started by reminding himself of what God had done in the past. To that end, mention was made of the time when the Lord brought them out of captivity in Babylon. With this in mind, he concluded that the Lord had done great things for them. Two things would have happened as a result of the Psalmist reminding himself of this past victory. Firstly, it boosted his faith that God was able to do it again. That is why he said, “they that sow in tears shall reap in joy”. Despite how sad the situation was, he expected a victory harvest.
The second benefit that ensued from the Psalmist reminding himself of what God had done in the past was to recall the seeds that they had sown to get the past victory. If we sow the same seeds that brought results in the past, we will get similar results like what was achieved previously. Accordingly, the Psalmist proclaimed that “he that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him”. There was no doubt in his mind that God would deliver them again if they planted the same seeds that gave them the victory in the past.
Life Application: Position yourself for God to give you the victory again by putting your faith in God and take steps to plant the seeds that created victory in the past.
Prayer: Father, thank you for the past victories and your ability to move on our behalf. I pray that you do it once again in this situation I’m faced with. I claim victory and deliverance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
