Do Not Cut Your Blessings Short

Daily Devotional

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

Worshipping God with our tithes and offering is widely practiced among the body of Christ; but less importance has been given to offering the best of our first harvest from all income streams to God. If you have not been doing that then you have been cutting your blessings short.

In addition to the instruction to honour God with our substance; Proverbs 3:9 also required a portion of the first fruits of our harvests, from all sources,to  be given back to God yearly. The Israelites in offering their first fruits offering to God were required to bring the best of their first harvest from among the produce of the ground, fruit trees, cattle and herds. Additionally, the firstborn of their sons should be given back to God. The requirement then seems to be mostly agricultural because such was the nature of their economy at the time. In our society today what is required is to give to God the best of our first harvest from all income sources.

Proverbs 3:9-10 stated two blessings that those who honour the Lord with their substance and their first fruits would receive. The first is that they will see abundance; the scripture said their barns will overflow with plenty. The second blessing is that new doors will open, evidenced by the scripture saying “thy presses shall burst out with new wine”. Since the instruction given had two components honouring the Lord with thy substance and also the first fruits of thy increase, it only stands to reason that receiving the full measure of what was promised necessitates obedience to both. If you have not yet started, make it a habit yearly to give back to God sacrificially from the first harvest you receive from all income streams in addition to your tithe and offering and see new doors open and abundance manifest in your life.

Life Application: Make it a practice to give to God yearly a sacrificial portion of the first harvest you receive from all income sources.

Prayer: Lord, I honor you with my substance and give back to you a portion of what you have blessed me with. In Jesus name, amen.
