Jeremiah 35:6-7 But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons forever: Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
The same way that you would be diligent to perform the last word of someone you love, let that be your attitude to the word of God.
In Jeremiah 35, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah that he should take the whole house of the Rechabites that lived in Judah, and bring them in a chamber in the tabernacle and give them wine to drink. So Jeremiah did as he was told, but when he set a vessel of wine and cups before the Rechabites and told them to drink wine, they said they would not do it. The reason they gave for not doing it was they had received an instruction from their father that they should not drink wine or any of their sons after them forever. In addition, they were forbidden to build houses but live in tents such that they would remain in the land of promise. These were instructions given by their father and under no circumstances would they break it.
The attitude of the Rechabites, mirrors the response of most of us to the last words of someone we love. We would do all possible and make great sacrifices to ensure that is done. That is all good; however, is that your attitude to the word of God? The attitude of the Rechabites to the word of their earthly father was a mirror of their attitude to the words of their heavenly Father, so God used them as an example to show their resolve. Are you focused like the Rechabites, to honour the word of your heavenly father at all costs? Because that was their attitude, God promised that they would fail from having a man standing before him. Because they were resolute in keeping the word of their father and God, they were given the privilege of staying in perpetual favour with God.
Do whatever it takes to keep to the words of God, doing so will give you perpetual favour with the father.
Life Application: Pray to love God more and treat every word as His last word; honour it all cost.
Prayer: Lord, May I follow your words and your commandments at all times. Lord, I will honor your word at all cost. In Jesus name, amen.
