Bible Verse

Joshua 9:14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

To avoid making mistakes in a written document it is recommended that you use a second eye. Do the same for major decisions that you have to make seeking the counsel of God.

Joshua and the people of Israel were deceived because they did not seek divine counsel prior to making an important decision. After they defeated the people of Jericho and Ai, the men of Gibeon, who lived nearby, came to make an agreement with the Israelites that they would do them no harm. Because they knew this was not something that the Israelites would agree to if they knew that they were close neighbours, they pretended to be residents of a far country.

The pretense of the men of Gibeon was disguised by presenting themselves with old garments, old sacks upon their ass and dry and mouldy bread, all of which was used to give the impression that they were travelling from far. Additionally, they bought the favor of the Children of Israel by bringing provision of food or victuals for them. Being deceived by the men of Gibeon they took their provision and made an agreement with them to do them no harm only to find out 3 days later that they made a mistake. It was a mistake that could have been avoided by seeking the counsel of the Lord.

Donโ€™t make major decisions without God first. It is easy to make such mistakes as you can feel compelled to make an immediate decision in the moment, feeling as if you do not have time to go before God on the matter. Consider the fact that doing it like that often ends in disaster. Without consulting God, Jehoshaphat went into a business venture with Ahaziah and all his ships were all destroyed. What the experience of the Children of Israel with the men of Gibeon teaches us is that it is not enough to look at things at face value because what is presented to you is not always the truth. You need a second eye to take a look; you get that second eye by seeking the counsel of God.

Life Application:

Make a list of every major decision that you will have to make during a week or day and take them to the Lord during your time of prayer. Keep praying about each until you get an answer.

Prayer:

Lord, I will not lean on my understanding nor my limited perspective on things. So, I look to you for guidance and direction in all things. In Jesus name, amen.
