Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Regardless of the trouble that you might be faced with, Psalms 46:1 reveals 3 reasons why victory is certain; Therefore, there is no need to be afraid. The first reason victory is certain in times of trouble is that God is our refuge. The word refuge means shelter or shield. That is one thing God is to us when trouble comes. When Pharaoh and his army pursued the Children of Israel after they came out of Egypt, the pillar of cloud that accompanied the Children of Israel moved from in front of them and positioned itself at the back. Right then God acted as their shield in a time of trouble. Make God your refuge in times of trouble by doing what Psalms 91 admonishes: dwelling in the secret place of the most high. By hiding yourself in God he will be your refuge, allowing you to abide under the shadow of the almighty.
The second reason we can be certain of victory in times of trouble is that God is our strength. When you are faced with difficult circumstances, you need strength to overcome them. God is that strength. He is not just the source of strength, He is our strength. It is His power and might that gives us the victory. In Judges 14:5-6 when the young lion came against Samson, the scripture said that the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily and he tore the lion to pieces. God was Samson’s strength, and He will be the same for us in times of trouble.
The final reason victory is certain is that God is our present help in times of trouble. As our present help we know He will show up whenever we call on Him and when he shows up, victory is assured. He did it for the Psalmist in Psalms 120:1 when he said “in my distress I cried unto the Lord and He heard me”. God showed up for him and he had the victory.
Given that God will protect, strengthen and show up when you need Him the most, you can face your troubles with confidence of victory.
Life Application: Make God your refuge, strength and present help, by keeping Him close at all times.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for being my refuge and strength and my present help in times of trouble. In Jesus’ name, amen.
