Receive Your Harvest in Due Season

Daily Devotional

Deuteronomy 11:13-14 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

What can we do to ensure that we receive our harvest when it is due? One way to answer that question is to assess the reason(s) some Bible characters saw a delay in their harvest.  The Children of Israel, for example, experienced a 38-year delay in possessing their Promised Land and the reason that happened was because they failed to believe and do what God said. It was for the same reason why years later they also encountered a seven (7) year famine while they were being oppressed by the Midianites in Judges 6.

On another occasion in 1 Samuel 21:1, there was a three (3) year famine in the land of Israel during David’s reign as King and the reason was that Saul had breached the word of God by breaking a vow that the Israelites had made to the Gibeonites. What was observed from the above-mentioned scenarios is that their harvest was delayed because they failed to keep the word of God.

The key to receiving the harvest in due season is obedience to the word of God. Moses told the Israelites as much in Deuteronomy 11:13-14.  In doing so he gave them three things that they needed to do to get rain and reap their corn, wine and oil in due season. These include: hearken diligently to the word of the Lord, to love the Lord their God and to serve Him with all their hearts and soul. These were basically the same thing that Moses told them that God required from them in Deuteronomy 10:12-13. What it communicates to us is that to get our rain and harvest in their due season we must consistently do what God requires of us. Position yourself for rain and the harvest that God has promised by being more consistent in doing the word of God.

Life Application: Receive your harvest in due season by adopting a  greater level of consistency in carrying out the word of the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, help me to remain faithful to you and to honor your word in all that I do. As I honor you, I thank you in advance for my harvest. In Jesus’ name, amen.
